2007 Titanium Symposium

The Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP), in association with NAMTEC and the Titanium Information Group (TIG) held the inaugural Titanium Symposium on 20th November.

The symposium featured high profile speakers from Titanium producers and end users. It presented an opportunity to learn about the Titanium industry from the perspective of various industry stakeholders. In addition it enabled attendees to share information and network.

In closing the Symposium, Tony Pedder (Chairman, AMP Advisory Group and Special Metals Forum) thanked the speakers for their excellent contributions to a very interesting day. He felt they had conveyed the exciting future prospects for the titanium industry.

He also thanked NAMTEC for their excellent organisation of the event.

He went on to refer to the benefits, for all participants, which can be derived by taking advantage of the networking possibilities being developed in the sector, whether this is through the Yorkshire Forward cluster work, lead by Richard Wright, or through the Titanium Information Group or the Special Metals Forum, both of which are being facilitated by NAMTEC. He urged those who were not already participants to sign up for one or both of these as a way of keeping their company in the forefront of industry developments.

Finally, he drew attention to the Symposium location on the Advanced Manufacturing Park. He pointed out the growing reputation of the Park as the premier location for companies who are keen to be located alongside of some of the most respected innovators in manufacturing and special metals applications. He urged anybody thinking of establishing a manufacturing/research presence or relocating one, to give the Park serious consideration and to contact Renaissance South Yorkshire to explore possibilities.

Titanium Conference a Major Success

Over 150 delegates from 17 countries attended the European Titanium Conference organised by NAMTEC (the National Metals Technology Centre) that was held recently at the Belfry Golf Club & Conference Centre in Birmingham.
The event, which was held in partnership with the Special Metals Forum and the Titanium Information Group (TIG), was designed to cover the latest innovations and developments in this valuable material and provide an insight into the Titanium industry and the opportunities for component manufacturers and suppliers to contribute to this large growth market.

The conference also covered details of technical developments, academic research and market reviews on the industry from across the world and featured keynote speakers from world leading organisations and renowned academic institutions. Dr Alan Partridge, Chief Executive of NAMTEC opened the event, followed by a market overview of general markets for Titanium, as well as the aerospace market, provided by David Hall from RTI International Metals Inc, Dr Laurent Pinto from Airbus and Dr David Rugg from Rolls Royce. The event then took on a global flavour, with an overview of the Russian markets and their aerospace industry along with an overview of the Chinese market for Titanium. Later sessions looked at the welding and joining of Titanium, Titanium in the service of defence, Titanium in biomedical applications, forging techniques and thermo-mechanical processing.

Chief executive of NAMTEC Alan Partridge explains: "The event was a huge success and it was great to see such a breadth of international businesses which are all involved in the Titanium industry. The feedback we had was very positive with many delegates immediately recognising opportunities within the market and benefiting from the chance to network with senior figures from the industry."

To maximise the range of topics available to delegates, the two day programme was split into a combination of plenary and parallel sessions, providing plenty of opportunity for delegates to attend a variety of presentations.

Nuclear Accreditation Seminar 2009

A new generation of nuclear power stations in the UK has been given formal backing by the government, which offers considerable opportunities for the UK's manufacturing sector. One of the challenges facing new entrants into the nuclear supply chain is the issue of accreditation and qualification.

The Special Metals Forum (SMF), in partnership with Bureau Veritas UK held the Nuclear Accreditation Seminar at NAMTEC on the 24th November to describe the quality assurance landscape relevant to supplying into the nuclear sector.

Presentations

Bureau Veritas Presentations - Colin Pimley and Graeme McLeish, Bureau Veritas UK

Update on UK Nuclear Supply Chain Activity - Dr Stephen Court, NAMTEC

Understanding Standards

Members of the Special Metals Forum and Titanium Information Group understand the importance of National and International Standards but not how they are developed and how companies can influence their formulation. In response to their request, the National Metals Technology Centre offered a chance to hear an expert from the British Standards Institute (BSI) describing the work of the BSI and how standards are developed.
In February Karen Border of BSI presented on the Ferrous Sector and Standardisation; she also advised on how companies can be involved in the Standardisation process.

Susanne Knight from the World Metal Index also explained about the MI-21 database. The database has over 200,000 standards, equivalents and mechanical properties for a wide variety of individual metal grades

Introducing BSI

BS Sector Standards Activity - Ferrous Metals

Materials and Healthcare - Metals Sector

MI-21

Oil and Gas Report Press Release and Editorial

As oil prices continues to rise, there has never been a better time to be more informed on opportunities for those materials manufacturers and engineering companies interested in supplying the oil and gas industry. The Special Metals Forum, managed by NAMTEC, launched their comprehensive report on this industry last year, specifically for its members. The report was well received and companies, not already members of the Special Metals Forum, were given the opportunity to obtain the report at the Offshore Europe exhibition in Aberdeen in September last year, where we exhibited with our members.
The industry and its supply chain have been through tough times in the last two years and, in recognition of this, the price of the report has been reduced from £595 to £250.

Interest has been further generated by the addition of Cobalt and Molybdenum to the London Metal Exchange on 22nd February 2010.
The purpose of this event on the 5th May, 2010 was to inform attendees with the implications of the addition of Cobalt and Molybdenum to the London Metal Exchange. There was also an update on the drivers of metal prices including Co, MO, Ni and Cr.

Tony Southgate of Standard Bank gave the main presentation; he is a specialist in Cobalt, Nickel and Molybdenum. Standard Bank's long-standing experience in base metals positions allows them to provide price risk management solutions across the base metals spectrum, including Copper, Aluminium, Lead, Zinc, Nickel, Tin and Steel. They are a global leader in commodity-related financial services, and a leading market maker of all London Metal Exchange contracts.
